Abstract

This article considers the main elements of Gianfranco Miglio’s reflection on war, on political violence and on the link between violence and the (domestic and international) political order. In particular, the article shows how Miglio has always been theoretically attracted by the problems of violence and the exercise of power, so much so as to adopt, more or less explicitly, a Thucydidean vision of politics. Furthermore, the text clarifies that Miglio’s perspective is aimed at developing a general theory of the political cycle, within which the international dimension is conceived as dependent on the internal dynamics of political syntheses and, more generally, as a consequence of technological change and the oscillation between the prevalence of the specifically political relationship (the so-called “political obligation”) and the prevalence of the “private” relationship (the “obligation-contract”, or “contract-exchange”).
