John Hallowell, il liberalismo e la democrazia
Contenuto principale dell'articolo
Abstract
John H. Hallowell (1913-1991) has been a major American political
theorist of the twentieth century. He is usually regarded as a conservative,
but throughout his intellectual work he showed a deep classical liberal afflatus. After a brief introduction to the thinker and his main intellectual influences, this article attempts to give an overview of his ideas on liberalism and democracy, by looking at his books and his most important articles and reviews. It also attempts to show how and why Hallowell was completely convinced of the moral and spiritual crisis of the West. Finally, it presents the Christian vision that Hallowell advocated as a remedy for the Western cultural and spiritual crisis.
