Abstract

In this article I reconstruct Luigi Einaudi’s thinking on the need for European integration through a federation, advancing three theses. Einaudi’s dream of the ‘United States of Europe’: 1) cannot be understood except in the light of his liberal thought: his reflection on the foundations of a good politeia, understood as a liberal ‘good society’ and liberal ‘good government’; 2) is traversed by two polarities – economic/institutional, local/global – which he conceives as lines of tension: both generative and potentially destructive of the social order; 3) shows, through the search for a “mediating formula” between these lines of tension, the eternal ‘human’ problem of every integration process and every community: how to recognize ourselves as united in diversity.
