Abstract

This article focuses on the delicate relationship between rulers and ruled in the democratic system, trying to define its contours within Manin's notion of democracy of the public. The aim is to verify whether this metamorphosis can have an ancestor in Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, as an ante litteram experience of the people becoming public and politics a stage performance. The comparison is based on some elements of similarity between the situation described by Manin and the disruptive experience of Roosevelt, starting from the similarities in terms of political atmosphere and the similarity of the management of the dialogue with the people between Roosevelt and the media figures of the political arena in the situation outlined by Manin.
